What a great morning we had in Kindergarten. Each child was able to build their own birdhouse. We measured, made estimates and hammered nails into the wood. Mr. Davison gave each of us 2 "cool tools" that we can use on other projects! Ask your child what they are.

"How To"/Procedure Writing!
Today during Writer's Workshop we created a Table of Contents for our "How To" Books. This was lots of fun! The children have all done amazing work!
We talked about how a Table of Contents can help us organize our work. Some of us remembered seeing a Table of Contents in other non fiction and fiction books we have read. This was lots of fun! The children have all done amazing work!

Curious George Boats!
What a wonderful day we have had!
This morning Mrs. Huntington came to Kindergarten to read us a Curious George story, "Curious George Rides A Bike!" In the book we discovered a procedure or a "How To" build a boat. This is a great connection with what we are doing in Writer's Workshop! We are writing "How To" or Procedure pieces. We have been writing procedures for how to make a peanut butter and jam sandwich, how to watch a fly, how to write our name, and lots more!!!

Reader's Workshop!
This morning the children read "Just Right Books" from their book bins and then met with an adult in a small guided reading group. During your child's group reading time they take a "book walk" through a story, talk about what they see and make predictions about what they think the story is about. We then read the story over and over.
The children will be bringing home their reading pocket every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with a "Just Right Book" to read to you. Please take time to listen to your child read their story and then return to Kindergarten the next day.

We also worked in our Dictation Journals today also. The children were given either, sounds, words, or sentences to write in their journals. What fun! We worked on letter formation and using strategies to help decode words.

Number Corner!
Number Corner Fun!
Everyday the children gather around number corner where we focus on the calendar, counting the days in school, the days in the month, seasons of the year and look for patterns! Wow! We do a lot of skills that focus on numeration. This month the children are subatizing numbers as well. This is when children can recognize a pattern of dots, or other representation that represents a certain number. Very Cool!

Curious George Pancakes!
This morning we measured all the dry ingredients needed to make Curious George Pancakes. The children used measuring tools to fill their bags. A couple of the children discovered that 4 1/2 cups equals 2 cups. Wow! Cooking is a great way to incorporate math concepts. I hope you all find time to cook and bake when you can with your child.
Today your child will be bringing home a baggie of ingredients to make pancakes along with the recipe. Enjoy!

Math Problem Solving!
Today we started our first math problem solver. The problem was about birds on a fence and we had to make predictions about what color bird would appear next. We read the problem together, talked about what we needed to do to solve the problem and ways to show our mathematical thinking. Wow! The children saw the pattern of colored birds right away! We then worked in small groups and made representations of how we solved the problem. We even had a guest come, Ms. Halsted! She is a retired teacher who worked at WCS for 36 years! She is going to come every week and help us solve problems.
