The Williston Food Shelf!
We had a great trip this afternoon to the food shelf. Deb Beckett gave us a tour, talked to us about what a food shelf is, it's importance and role that it plays in a community. The children were able to carry their own bag of food and deliver it as well. I am making a list on the blog of items that the food shelf needs. Please feel free to drop these items off in Kindergarten or the food shelf. We will continue to collect food throughout the year and ask for parent volunteers to deliver the food with some of the children. Thanks so very much everyone!
Also on January 2nd and January 3rd the food shelf is moving to a new location, near Rocky's Pizza. They can use your help! Just show up on Sunday, January 3rd at the Williston Food Shelf to help with this big move if you can.
Sorting, Organizing and Dividing Food For The Food Shelf
This morning the children spent part of their ease-in time dividing the donated food into equal amounts to be taken to the Williston Food Shelf this afternoon. Wow! Lots of discussion about what is equal, heavy, light and the same! Stay tuned later for more information regarding our visit this afternoon.
We are also donating a math quilt that we made to help decorate the walls in the Food Shelf. Look at how beautiful it is!

Caps For Sale!
This morning we read a wonderful story called, "Caps For Sale." It is a great story about a peddler who sells caps and runs into some curious monkeys while he naps in the countryside.
After we read the story we created a detailed picture of what we enjoyed in the book. Some of us wrote the title and even labeled our drawings. One of the children had an idea! The child wrote 2 words on the smartboard for everyone to see along with a picture clue for EACH word in case they could not read the word. Wow!

Creating Informational Books About The Forest!
Today during Writer's Workshop we created Informational Books about animals and other things that live in the forest. The children were creating books that had lots of non fiction features. Some of the features are; labeling, scientific drawings with labels, bold writing, captions for pictures and we even used real pictures of animals from magazines!

Guest Reader's in Kindergarten!
Each week we have a guest reader come to read us a story. This is a great opportunity for your child to see what other children have to offer and to help your child become more familiar with other children in our school. This is one of the many ways we celebrate literacy in our school as well as a great example of a meaningful mentoring opportunity.

Literacy Activity Using The SMARTboard!
The SMARTboard is a great tool to have and use in Kindergarten! During our Morning Meeting Everyday we read the message and then we identify familiar words, letters, look for patterns and even read the message with expression! Lots of fun!
During our literacy time this morning one of our stations was using the SMARTboard. Children worked in a pair. They came up to the board and took turns rolling the dice. Every time they rolled a dice a letter would show. The children had to identify the letter name and sound. What fun!

Creating "Cool Tool Kits" To Encourage Writing To Happen Throughout The Day!
This afternoon we decided as a group to put out lots of different types of "cool tools" to help us to be expressive and creative when we are working in all of the different places in our classroom. We ended up choosing many different writing and art materials as well as deciding on the numbers and types of tools to be placed in specific areas in Kindergarten.

Different Types Of Writing!
Wow! This morning one of the children wrote a nice welcome sign for our new classmate. During exploration time another child took an order! I love how the child wrote K for coffee and the letters strs and the number 2, for 2 strawberries! Some great ideas for writing at home would be to encourage your child to make lists of things. Some lists might be a grocery list, what you will be doing for the day, a list of favorite foods, etc. Encourage your child to write the sounds that they hear in a word when trying to write it. If you try making a list with your child at home, send it in as I would love to see what they did!

Graphing The Weather!
This morning we created a graph on the floor using our weather cards that showed what the weather was like during the month of October. We talked about collecting "data'/information and then "representing" it to share with others in the form of a graph.
