Day 40

Today was a wonderful day @vermontkkids123

Look here to see photos of our day.

The children are working on counting forwards and backwards to 20. To help us learn this skill we are doing dot to dots of all the continents!

We created coniferous and deciduous trees this afternoon.

We are building our reading stamina too. We are using our eyes at look at what we see in books and our brains to think about what we notice.

Tomorrow we think about what is on our plate, how it gets there and where our food comes from.

Day 37: @vermontkkids123

Look here to see photos from today.

Today we wrote about our favorite characters in 2 books that we read. We noticed that when we write words it is important to leave a space so we can read what we wrote. As readers, we noticed that all books have spaces between their words too. This makes it easier to read what the author writes.

Respect is the word of the day today! This idea was inspired by a wonderful book that Peter Reynolds wrote, The Word Collector. We are collecting important words and posting them on a tree in kindergarten.
We like this book and think it connects to global goal 4 because we want all children to know about words and be able to read them.

We also enjoyed running outside quickly when we noticed it was snowing!

Day 36

Look here to see photos of our day.

Today we found letters, numbers and sight words in our morning message. We are great detectives.
We launched the writer's workshop today too!  As writer's, we have our own writing folders, special tools, and paper each day that we write.  During our share session today we noticed that the words people wrote matched their picture and that we are great at sounding out words.

We explored the concepts of greater than and less than today. We wrote equations that make 5 too.

We had visitors from Horizon come and tell us about movie night. It is this Friday at the Allen Brook School. All donations go to support the Children's Hospital.

We read a couple of great stories about a character Rocket who is a dog who is learning to read and write.

Today we created Zero Hunger posters as a way to help advocate for people to help support families that do not have enough food. We are also collecting food for the food shelf in Williston.
Some of the food items they need are sauces, noodles, pasta, canned fruit, and canned vegetables.  Thanks so much for your support.

We are exploring 10 and 5. We are learning about all the different combinations we can use to create these numbers.

Today we created what we would add to our magic pots. The children were all so kind and thoughtful with their ideas.

Day 32: @vermontkkids123

Look here to see photos from today.

We are reading an amazing story called; "One Potato, Two Potato." The story connects with 2 global goals.

We learned a new way to think about the number 5. We are creating different ways to make 5.
We had an amazing conversation with our friends in Ghana.
We taught them a new song and they taught us a new song. We asked many questions about them, their school, food, and how they get to school.
We also noticed that they have 80 students. We are learning to Listen To Understand from our new friends. They had a teacher for many students. We noticed how respectful all of the children were.

Day 31!

Today we explored many sight words and letters in our morning message. Our Smartboard is a great tool that highlights what we are learning. Today we noticed that we have a blue line in our Twitter feed. That reminds us that we are having a conversation with people we know about our learning.

This afternoon we used images on Google and different books to help us explore the difference between coniferous and deciduous trees. We had a lot of fun drawing like scientists in our field journals.

Day 30: @vermontkkids123

Look here to see photos from today.

We had a wonderful walk and visit at the fire station. On our way to the fire station the children found lots of trash and started picking it up and made a connection with #15 Life On Land. I told the children we would collect trash another time when we had bags and gloves. Later another child connected with global goal # 3 Good Health and Well Being because we were walking to the fire station and not taking a bus.
Ms. Julianna from Americorps visited kindergarten this morning and Mrs. LeBerges class joined us. We learned about some more birds and where they go during the winter months. We walked outside and saw 2 Bluejays. Later we collaborated and made a huge V formation just like some birds do when they fly.

Day 29: @vermontkkids123

Photos from today.

This morning we looked at photos of our new friends in Ghana. We are using Empatico as a platform to connect.

We wonder..
1. How do the children get to school?
2. What language do they speak?
3. Does it get cold there?
4. Does everyone get food?
5. Do they know about the global goals?

We notice..
1. Green mountains
2. everyone is wearing green and white
3. our skin color is the same and different
4. everyone is in a circle

Ms. Julianna from Americorps visited kindergarten this morning to speak to us about birds and then we went bird watching.

We shared our fridges inspired by the story; "Maddi's Fridge."

Today we read a wonderful story;" Maddi's Fridge." The story was a wonderful way to introduce global goal 32 Zero Hunger.

Later, Debbie Ingram, a State Senator
visited the kindergarten and read another story; "Gracie For President." The children presented her with her own global goal chart so she can also become an ambassador for the global goals.

During math workshop time we are exploring structured math talk. Today we were making observations of patterns as mathematicians.

Monday, October 8, 2018

Day 26: @vermontkkids123

Look here to see photos from our day.

We have read and are re-reading "Those Shoes". The story is powerful and connects to Global Goal #1 No Poverty.

Today we created circles and straight and curvy lines with Bee-Bots. Coding is a lot of fun and we get opportunities to collaborate and solve problems.

As scientists we were using the skill of observation. We noticed lots of patterns in nature and learned what a deciduous and a coniferous tree looks like.

Subitizing is fun too! Be sure to ask your child to explain.

Thursday, October 4, 2018

Day 24: @vermontkkids123

Today was a wonderful day in Kindergarten!

We all became official "Super Hero's" for the Global Goals! We created a scientific drawing of a worm and created snap and clap patterns.

This is what we think "Super Hero's" are:
* they fly
*rocky
*strong
*save the world
* help the world
* kind to the world
* make flowers
* save people in the ocean
*can pick up garbage
* catch people who need to be caught
* save people from bad guys
* pick up enemies and put them where they can't hurt anyone
* lift up big buildings

Day 23: @vermontkkids123

Look here to see photos from today.

We enjoyed a great story called; "Yucky Worms". We looked at non-fiction books too about worms. As readers and writers we are creating labels to give our illustrations more meaning. We created our own worms out of old socks.

Our Smartboard is a great tool because we get to identify words, numbers and even letters.

Our document camera gives us opportunities to reflect on what we create. The children have fun facilitating what people notice and answer questions.
