Learning From Home: Day 28

Today we learned about bird nests from Dr. Cross.  As we explore bird habitats we are thinking about where bird nests can be found and the materials they use to create their homes. 

Today's Challenge: Make a list of what you like to eat. Then make a list of the things birds like to eat.

Learning From Home: Day 27

Today we watched a Mystery Doug Science Show about the Earth.  How old is the Earth? 
We learned:
* the calendar was created to keep track of how old things are, have been around, keep track of time
* birth rings in a tree let us know how long a tree has been around
* inside rocks, we find layers that help us learn about how old the ground is
* The Earth is estimated to be about 4, 500 million years old.

Today's Challenge:
Create a poster for the Earth. Think about why we want to celebrate and take care of the Earth. What is important to you? What do you want to tell people? Share your poster with Mrs. D. and share on padlet if you would like too!

Learning From Home: Day 26

Today we are exploring how and why animals build homes. 
Some reasons:
animals need shelter
keep safe from predators
hibernate
store food

Today's Challenge: Think about an animal you are interested in. Draw the animal and label it. Then draw its habitat, where it lives, and what you think it's home may look like. Share with Mrs. D. when you are ready.

Learning From Home: Day 25

Today we watched a Mystery Doug Science Show about why birds lay eggs in spring. Then we learned about the different types of bird nests there are in the world and what they can be made of.
How do birds move?
fly, swim, hop, jump What are your ideas?

different sizes, shapes, and colors
can be found in high places and low places
made of twigs, plastic, leaves, material, moss, rocks
Today's Challenge:
Make a list of ways that you can get around. Then create an illustration of 1 idea from your list. Color and label. Then share with Mrs. D.

Learning From Home: Day 24

Today we explored the life cycle of a bird. We learned about the robin, where it lives, eats, and what it's nest looks like. Look below to see the videos we watched about robins. Try creating your own life cycle of a bird. I shared mine. I am curious about what yours might look like. 

Today's Challenge: Create your own "Bird Watching Blind". 
Just like in the book; "Birds, Nests, and Eggs" think about a spot where you can go. Bring along your binoculars, notebook, paper, and writing tools so you can sketch and write about what you notice.

Learning From Home: Day 23

Today's Challenge: Find a quiet spot in nature and sit quietly and think about all of the "bird-like" features that members of your family have. Fill out the chart with what you know. Then talk to someone at home about your chart and how you came up with the numbers you did! Please share your findings with Mrs. D.

Multiple Representations: When we solve problems we think about different ways to represent our thinking. I thought about this challenge in different ways.

Learning From Home: Day 22

As we explore the life of birds we are learning about the different beaks, feet, claws, and other features that are unique to each type of bird.

Today's Challenge: Walk outside and use your skill of observation to see if you see any bird eggs on the ground or in a tree. Then use Kiddle.co and search for bird eggs of the world. Look at the eggs you see and draw 4 different eggs and label the eggs with a word that describes the egg. Then share your learning with me.

Today we explored beaks, feet, and claws. We noticed that birds have 2 feet, but their feet tell us what type of bird they are and how their feet help them to adapt and survive in their habitat.

 


Today's Challenge: How many feet live in your house? Create an illustration that shows the number of feet in your house and how you solved the challenge. Please send Mrs. D. a photo/picture of what you came up with!

Learning From Home:Day 20

Today we read a book about bird parts. As we begin our exploration of birds we want to learn about the different features bird have and how their features help them navigate in the world.
Birds Have beaks, feet, eyes, legs, body, feathers, tails, and wings.

Today's Challenge: Go outside as an explorer and use your binoculars to find and observe a bird. Then create a scientific drawing of your bird. Try to include all of the body parts we learned about today. Color your bird and share it with Mrs. D.

Learning From Home: Day 19

Today we learned about a fish called carp thanks to National Geographic.

Today's Challenge: try creating your own scientific drawing of a carp. Then think about a water bird that might like to have a carp for a snack! Remember kiddle.co is a great place to research new learning. I look forward to seeing everyone's fish!

Today's Challenge!
Explore with the binoculars you made and observe bird life. What colors of birds do you see? How many? Where did you see them?

 What would you like to do?

Draw a detailed map of where you are outdoors and where you observed birds. Think about adding details above your head, under your feet, and around you!
Draw a bird in its habitat and label it.
