Learning From home: Day 50

Today we watched a Mystery Doug science session about where goosebumps come from. It was interesting and we learned a lot.
Today we read a great book by National Geographic about ducklings. We learned about the Wood Duck.
Today's Challenge: Choose an activity that Mrs. D. sent to you. You can color a Wood Duck and it's family and/or do the dot to dot activity sheet about a Wood Duck. Share your work with Mrs. D.

Learning From Home:Day 49

Today we learned about the saltwater marsh and the Mangrove Forest from Skype A Scientist, Kara Radabaugh.
Today's Challenge: Go outside and find a spot to sit and make observations. In your spot, think about what animals and other species live under you, around, you, and above you. Make an illustration and share it with Mrs. D.

Learning From Home: Day 48


Today we explore the Mangrove Forest in preparation for our Skype A Scientist on Thursday. Mangrove Forests are amazing and provide a safe place for much smaller fish to live. You will notice that the trees grow their roots out of the water. The Mangroves are unique because they can survive in saltwater. Watch this video to learn more about the Mangrove forests.

Learning From Home: Day 47

Today we watched a Mystery Doug science session on what the largest tree in the world is. We explored what we mean when we ask about size. Size can be circumference, height, width, or weight.

Today's Challenge: Go outside and look around where you live. Do you see any trees? How many different types of trees do you see? Draw a picture of a tree and make a list of what you think a tree needs to survive. Is your tree large? How do you know? Talk to someone about your observations.

Learning From Home: Day 46

Today we explored the life of birds thanks to our amazing 4 Winds parents. We learned some new vocabulary words and more information about all the different nest birds can create depending on where they live.

Today's Challenge: Go outside and take a walk. Make a list of places you find that you think a bird might like to live. Think about what scientist Kirsten shared with us while you search.

Learning From Home: Day 45

Today we watched a Mystery Doug session. He helped us explore the question of why penguins cannot fly, even though they have wings.
We learned that penguins use their wings to swim fast in the water and to move on land.
 

Today's Challenge: Go outside and try to walk like a penguin. Then find a spot in nature and draw yourself.

Learning From Home: Day 44

Today we learned about Climate Change, Global Goal #13. Our Skype A Scientist Kirsten talked to us about the impact climate change has on birds, their life, and habitat. We learned about ticks and how they get to different habitats too.  
Today's Challenge: Take a walk outside and look, listen, and think about what is around you. Think about what you can do to help keep nature healthy. Draw a picture and label what is important.

Learning From Home: Day 42

Today we watched a Mystery Doug science segment about the Ostrich egg. We learned some interesting information about this egg and compared it to a chicken egg.

Today's Challenge: What would you rather eat? A chicken egg or an Ostrich egg? Talk to someone at home about your thinking. Then draw a picture of the bird and the egg you would rather eat. Share with Mrs. D.'s

Today we read about how birds find their way. We are learning that birds migrate to find food and when the seasons change.

Learning From Home: Day 40

Today we learned about bird migration form Madelyn Ore. 
Below are some of the stories/maps of our bird's flights. We are exploring and learning that when birds migrate their flight tells a story. We learned about how they survive their journey too!

Today's Challenge: Go outside and find a place you would like to "fly to". Then "fly" to that spot. How long did it take to get there? Did you need a drink of water? Then find another spot to "fly" to that is further than your first spot. Talk to someone about your flights. What were you feeling? Tired? Thirsty? Why?

Today's Challenge: Go outside and pretend you are a bird that is migrating back to Vermont. Think about where you would stop along the way to get water and food.
Talk to someone at home about your plan/story.
Think about the story you would share and talk to someone about your ideas.

Today's Challenge: Go outside and create your own Echo Art Creature. Take a photo and/or draw and share it with Mrs. D.

Learning From Home: Day 37

Look here to see the video we watched today about owls. We learned about triangulation is and how it helps owls to find their prey.
Today's Challenge: Take a walk outside where you live and using your skill of observation look for places where you think an owl might like to build a nest. Then talk to someone about what you found and why it would be a great habitat for an owl.

Learning From Home: Day 31

Today we read another book written by Gail Gibbons. Today we explored the life of a Puffin.  They nest along the shoreline under rocks and make tunnels. They lay eggs and keep their eggs warm until they hatch.

Today we read a story about ducks. Ducks are a water bird. We learned the difference between domesticated and wild ducks. When we see ducks in nature we watch them and notice the things that they do.

Happy May Day!  Today is May 1st and in some countries, people have special celebrations and festivals to welcome in the change of season, spring!

Today's Challenge: Make a May Day basket. May Day baskets are given to someone to wish them a happy May Day. Many people give the baskets filled with flowers, candy, and artwork, or even treasures from nature.
