Work Stations in Math!

Today we worked on lots of different activities during math. Some of us practiced writing numbers and counted, while others created designs with pattern blocks and then some of us played a bingo game using tallies and identifying numbers. Lots of fun!

Our Visit to the Food Shelf

Our trip to the Williston Food Shelf was wonderful. We saw where the food is kept, listened to volunteers explain how the food is given out, the importance of having a food shelf and ways that we can help support the food shelf. The food shelf seems to need the following items; peanut butter, jelly or jam, canned fruit, 2 quart containers of juice, canned protein, shampoo, toothpaste and toilet paper. In your child's Friday Folder is a flyer from the food shelf with more detailed information on ways to help, hours of operation and volunteering information. Thanks so much!

Reading, Reading and more Reading!

We are all enjoying listening to the story, "Charlotte's Web by, E. B. White. We have been talking a lot about the characters in the story. I read at least 1-2 chapters aloud each day.

We also have children who enjoy reading aloud to small groups of children, while others read by themselves in a quite spot or with each other. Be sure to ask your child about what books they are reading in Kindergarten!

Sorting Food!

The children worked together using our cool, colored rug to divide the food we collected evenly into 18 groups! I enjoyed listening to how they problem solved what items go where. The children also talked a lot about the weight of different food items and how to make sure that the bags were not too heavy to carry. Lots of great math language being used!

Getting Ready for the Outdoors!

I thought that you might enjoy seeing these pictures of the children getting ready for recess! Wow! We are learning how to put our outdoor gear on and take it off. Today we spoke a lot about keeping all of our belongings in our own spot so we can keep track of our things! Wow!!

Collecting Data!

This morning our class leader counted and wrote tally marks as the children voted on their favorite title for our new quilt. Wow! Lots of math happening! We talked about how we collect data or information and how it can help us solve problems!

Quilts for the Food Shelf!

Good Morning!Wow!
Kindergarten has been amazing this morning! The children created another quilt to give to the Food Shelf! We shared our mathematical observations about the information that the quilt showed us. I am so proud of all the great problem solving that we do in Kindergarten. Your children are so creative!

What do you do with old crayons?

Today we discovered that we could make "crazy crayons" from old crayons. All we had to do was peel off the paper, break the crayons into small pieces to fit in a muffin tin, bake for 2 minutes on HIGH! Wow! Crazy Crayons!

Problem Solving!
The children discovered many ways to count our old crayons... We counted by 2's, 1's and a couple of us by 6's! We looked for ways to put the muffin trays in columns and rows too! Great Fun!

Morning Exploration!

I thought you might enjoy looking at these pictures of the children during our morning exploration time. Today some of the stations focused on patterning and symmetry.
The children also colored their own keyboard chart to show you. We use our right hand for the purple keys and our left hand for the red keys.
Enjoy!

Quilts with Patterns!

During Number Corner time we have been creating lots of different patterns by creating quilt squares. The children are becoming experts at recognizing rows and columns as well as making observations about the patterns they see. The butterfly quilt we created will be donated to the Williston Food Shelf to decorate their wall!
Enjoy!

Bits and Pieces!

During our Exploration Time in the morning children sign in, finish up work and also make independent choices of what they would like to do!

Some children bring cool things in from home, like rocks! These children are examining rocks with magnifying glasses and making scientific drawings! They came up with this all by themselves!

Exploration is a great time to watch and listen as the children create and design their own choices.

This morning a child decided to add insects and other creepy crawlers to our forest! Another great example of the connections that children can make when given time to create and explore their thinking.

Technology in Kindergarten!

Some of the children are using a program called Lexia which helps to reinforce letters, sounds and syllables. Children have their own account where they log in and follow the program set up for them.

We also visit the technology lab twice a week. The children are now able to log in and out by themselves as well as use a program called PAINT. Presently we are working on Touch Typing Junior to help us learn where to place our hands on the keyboard. Very Fun!

Graphing Galore!

Wow! This morning during Problem Solving Time we looked at all the different types of weather that we had in November. We looked at our weather cards, "analyzed" what we saw and then began to organize our data into a graph! The children discovered many neat things. We arranged the cards into rows first, then we created columns with the cards that were the same. This was a great opportunity to listen to what the children noticed. We call this making mathematical observations. Wow! Some columns were longer, smaller while others had the same amount or equal. Some of the children recognized which columns even had odd or even numbers of cards! Be sure to look at these pictures with your child and talk about what they did!

Read Aloud Time!

As you know reading aloud to your child is VERY important! In Kindergarten we read stories daily, sing songs and chat Nursery Rhymes. Lots of fun! We also have older children from different teams in the school read aloud to us as well. I am showing you a brief slide show of some of our other readers. Your children are listening actively and are learning many different features that different books have. Enjoy!

Good Morning!
I wanted to give you an update on our weekly reading partners. As you know we are partnered with Ms. Munt's class. The children read together each Wednesday from 2-2:25 PM. Wow! It has been a huge success. The children are developing great active listening skills as well as nice relationships with their reading partner.
Lots of Fun!

Sorting Pictures!

Wow! Today the children worked on sorting pictures into different categories. I was so thrilled with the language they were using! Some children recognized that they were creating columns, "Just like we do in math Mrs. D.!" This is very exciting. Your child will be bringing home their picture sort activity today!

Animals with Color!

This morning we started to paint our forest animals. The children are learning about all the characteristics and features that their forest animal has.

The children also started organizing the food we are collecting for the Willsiton Food Shelf.

Circumference!

Wow! We just went outside and made scientific observations of the different trees we have at Allen Brook. We noticed that we have pine trees, birch trees and a maple tree! We talked about the difference between a deciduous and coniferous tree! Your children noticed the tree litter under the tree to give us a clue! Very Nice!

Your child will be coming home today with a tape measure. It is for them to keep and use! We had fun comparing lengths of all the trees we saw.

Paper Mache Galore!

The children have now completed the first step in creating their forest animals! Phew! Thanks so much to all who were able to donate materials and come into Kindergarten to help! We will begin the second phase of this project on Friday.
We continue to work on numeral recogniton, numeral writing and counting. Today we worked on the concepts of before and after. Very fun! Ask your child to tell you numbers that come before 10, after 11, etc.!
Please check out the the bookshelf as I have added some new books.
Enjoy the afternoon,

Trees, Trees, Trees

Hello Everyone!

Today we worked on creating an environment underground. Some of the children made spiders, worms and other creatures that live where you find tree roots. Some of the children explored pine cones and needles of a coniferous tree.

During Writer's Workshop the children created a diagram of their animal that lives in the forest. Some children choose insects, birds, creepy crawly bugs, rabbits and other furry creatures. The diagrams are colorful, labelled with words that describe their animal and also a habitat of where you would find that animal in the forest.

We are working really hard on counting by 10's, 5's and 1's to 100! Ask your child about some of the counting games we played.

Enjoy the afternoon,

Sharon

A Forest in Vermont

Hello Everyone!

I am so excited as I am creating a blog for Kindergarten! This will be a great way for you to log on to see what is happening. Please feel free to leave comments.

Today we worked on creating birch trees for our deciduous forest and put labels on things we would find in a coniferous forest. I hope you enjoy checking out the pictures with your child.

I will also have a Shelf of books that we have read in Kindergarten as well. I will try to update often. Our current author is Lois Elhert. Her stories focus a lot on animals and their habitats. Enjoy!

More to follow!
